Pune Records Hottest April in a Decade with 13 Days Above 40°C

Pune, 30th April 2025: Pune’s Shivajinagar area witnessed its hottest April in a decade this year, with temperatures crossing 40°C on 13 days — the highest number of such days recorded in the past ten years. The previous records stood at 12 days in April 2019 and 11 days in 2016.
The heat wave intensified from the second week of April, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures remaining consistently above average. The persistently dry conditions, coupled with hot winds from the north, contributed to the unusually high temperatures.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, such prolonged heat in April is rare. For comparison, in April 2021, temperatures did not cross the 40°C mark even once. This year, however, 13 days breached that threshold — setting a new benchmark for April heat in Shivajinagar.
A review of April temperatures over the last ten years highlights the trend:
Year – Number of Days Above 40°C
2015 1
2016 11
2017 6
2018 2
2019 12
2020 1
2021 0
2022 7
2023 1
2024 7
2025 13
Average Minimum Temperature Also Second Highest
This April also recorded the second-highest average minimum temperature for the month in the past decade. IMD data shows that the average minimum temperature at Shivajinagar this month was 21.53°C, just shy of the 21.63°C recorded in April 2022 — the highest in the last 10 years.
Relief Likely After May 4
The weather department has forecast that the intense heat will likely continue for a few more days. A marginal drop in temperature is expected around May 4, as cloud cover and humidity levels are projected to increase.
