Pune: Residents Warn of Disaster as Canal Leakage Continues in Ghorpadi-Wanowrie
Pune, 28th May 2026: Water leakage from a canal in the Jambhulkar Mala area of Ghorpadi-Wanowrie, which first began on May 24, has now increased significantly, triggering panic among local residents.
Citizens alleged that they had informed the irrigation department about the leakage when it initially started, but timely action was not taken. As a result, a large volume of water is now flowing out of the canal, raising fears of a possible breach.
Water and mud have accumulated on the road alongside the canal, worsening conditions in the area. Residents warned that if immediate measures are not taken, the canal could burst and lead to a major accident.
The incident has reminded locals of the major canal breach near Magarpatta City on March 23 this year. In that incident, water entered several companies in the Hadapsar industrial area, causing heavy financial losses. Nearly 2 lakh TMC of water was reportedly wasted in the breach.
Residents claimed that repeated negligence by the irrigation department has resulted in such incidents occurring frequently, affecting common citizens. A minor accident had also taken place in the Jambhulkar Mala area four to five years ago, following which a nearby ghat was closed for safety reasons.
Locals have now demanded permanent measures to prevent any major disaster in the future.
Mohan Bhadane, Deputy Engineer Officer of the Khadakwasla Irrigation Department, said officials had inspected the leakage spot and reduced the flow of water in the canal to prevent a breach. He added that necessary repair work would be carried out to control the leakage.
