Pune: Retired Police Officer Attacked In Viman Nagar; Assailants Wielded Sword, Created Chaos; Investigation Underway
Viman Nagar, 10th March 2025: In a shocking incident, a retired police officer was assaulted with a sharp weapon, and a gang of attackers vandalized his home in Viman Nagar, creating terror in the area. The attack took place on Sunday afternoon around 1:30 pm at Forest Park.
The victim, Gorakhnath Eknath Shirke (65), a retired police sub-inspector residing in Forest Park, Viman Nagar, filed a complaint at the Airport Police Station. Based on his complaint, police have registered a case against Govind Hanumant Kanal, his wife, Mayur Sakat, Raju Devkar, Kartik Raju Devkar, and five others from Yerawada.
Shirke, who has served in several Pune police stations, built his house in Forest Park after retirement. His two sons live separately on rent, and he recently decided to construct an additional floor on his house. The dispute arose over a damaged drainage cover on a public road in the society.
According to police reports, Govind Kanal, who runs a housekeeping contract business, accused Shirke of damaging the drainage cover with vehicles entering his premises and demanded that he bear the repair costs. However, society residents claim the cover was already broken, but due to Kanal’s influence, no one dared to speak up. Shirke had already arranged for a replacement ring for the cover, but Kanal insisted that he pay for the entire repair.
On Sunday afternoon, Kanal, accompanied by his relatives, entered Shirke’s home, assaulted him with kicks and punches, and called more of his men from Yerawada. Upon their arrival, the assailants barged into the house, creating havoc.
In a terrifying display of violence, Kanal reportedly brandished a sword in the air, issuing death threats. The attackers then smashed chairs and plant pots in the parking area and damaged household items inside the residence.
Following the incident, Inspector (Crime) Ashalata Khapre from Airport Police Station visited the crime scene and gathered information. Sub-Inspector Chetan Bhosale is leading the investigation.
