Pune: Sewage Treatment Plant Between Bavdhan and Pashan Completed, Awaiting Inauguration
Aundh, 30th June 2025: A modern sewage treatment plant aimed at protecting Pashan Lake from pollution has been completed between Bavdhan and Pashan, though its official inauguration is still pending.
Local residents and environmentalists had long voiced concerns about untreated sewage contaminating the lake, harming its water quality. Responding to these demands, the Pune Municipal Corporation built a state-of-the-art treatment facility with a capacity of one million litres per day, employing Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) technology.
The ₹5.5-crore project, funded through the 15th Finance Commission, involved repairing old sewer lines, laying a new 900 mm diameter pipeline over a stretch of 1,200 meters, and constructing the treatment plant. Work began in 2023 and was completed this year.
Key benefits of the project include:
Stopping sewage discharge into Pashan Lake, curbing water hyacinth spread
Reducing mosquito breeding and foul odours, improving the local environment
Supporting biodiversity in the lake ecosystem
Providing about one million litres of treated water daily for reuse in gardening and construction
Junior Engineer Atul Kadu from the Sewerage Department said minor external works remain, but a trial run will begin within a week, after which the plant will be formally inaugurated and handed over.
The project had backing from Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol and State Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil.
“This long-pending demand of local citizens will finally be fulfilled, benefiting both the lake’s ecosystem and surrounding communities,” said Shivam Sutar, a former municipal corporator who actively followed up on the project.
