Pune Shocker: Woman Kills 11-Month-Old, Throws Body in Well
Pune, 7th April 2026: In a chilling case of a mother allegedly killing her own child, Pune Rural police have arrested a 22-year-old woman for murdering her 11-month-old son and dumping his body in a well in a bid to cover up the crime.
The accused, identified as Pooja Ravindra Pawar, a resident of Bhambarde village in Shirur taluka, was taken into custody nearly a month after the incident came to light.
Police said the woman allegedly murdered her son Yash on March 8 and disposed of the body by placing it in a bag filled with stones before throwing it into a well. The police suspect that she wanted to remarry and viewed the child from her second marriage as an obstacle.
The case surfaced after her husband, Ravindra Ashok Pawar, approached the police on April 5, reporting that his wife had left home with the child on March 8 and had not returned. Officials said he delayed filing a complaint as she had left home in a similar manner in the past, but grew concerned when she remained missing for several weeks.
A team from Ranjangaon MIDC police station traced the woman to Jambut village within hours of launching the probe. During initial questioning, she claimed the child had died after falling and sustaining a head injury. She said she panicked and disposed of the body.
However, further investigation and interrogation revealed inconsistencies, following which the woman allegedly confessed to the crime. Police said she admitted to killing the child by hitting his head against a stone platform, allegedly driven by personal circumstances and ongoing disputes.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Prashant Dhole said the accused had attempted to conceal the crime by weighing down the body with stones before dumping it in a well. The decomposed body was later recovered and sent for post-mortem.
The accused was arrested on Monday and produced before a court on Tuesday, which remanded her to police custody till April 10.
