Pune: Sugar and Jaggery Prices Surge Amid Rising Demand; Green Peas and Edible Oil Prices Decline

Pune, 3rd March 2025: As temperatures rise in Pune, the demand for sugar and jaggery has surged, driven by increased consumption of cold beverages. This has led to a price hike of ₹50 to ₹100 per quintal in just a week. Meanwhile, wholesale markets have reported a decline in the prices of green peas and edible oils.
According to traders, sugar prices have increased by ₹50 per quintal. Jaggery prices have also risen due to growing demand and a shortage of sugarcane, which has forced many gurhals (jaggery production units) to shut down, leading to a reduced supply.
On the other hand, green pea prices have dropped due to an influx of supply from other states, particularly Uttar Pradesh. Wholesale traders noted a steady decline in prices over the past few days, with a drop of ₹1,500–₹2,000 per quintal last week. In contrast, white peas are being supplied in smaller quantities, leading to a price increase of ₹200 per quintal.
Edible oil prices have also seen a slight dip due to low demand. Soybean oil prices have fallen by ₹15 to ₹20 per 15 kg container, while prices of other edible oils, including groundnut oil, coconut oil, and vegetable ghee, have remained stable.
The arrival of new wheat and Gavran Jowar has increased, with steady demand keeping prices stable. Rice prices have also remained unchanged. Meanwhile, Kabuli chana prices have dropped by ₹1,000 per quintal due to increased supply.
The prices of pulses such as tur dal, matki, masoor, and urad dal have remained stable due to low imports and exports. However, gram dal prices have decreased by ₹100 per quintal due to weak demand, while gram flour prices have dropped by ₹50 per 50 kg bag.
