Pune: Suncity–Karvenagar Bridge Nears Completion, Opening Expected by April
Pune, 22nd February 2026: The under-construction bridge across the Mutha River linking Suncity and Karvenagar is in its final phase, with civic authorities aiming to make it operational by the end of April. The project is intended to ease persistent congestion on Sinhgad Road and surrounding routes frequently used by commuters travelling between western and southern parts of the city.
“Construction has reached its last stage. Work on the Karvenagar end is complete, while progress on the Suncity side is moving quickly. We are working towards opening the bridge by the end of April,” said Dinkar Gojare, head of the project department.
Traffic flow in this corridor has increased significantly due to vehicles heading toward Kothrud, Satara Road and Katraj, resulting in daily bottlenecks near Warje, especially during peak hours. Civic officials said the bridge project was sanctioned in May 2023 and physical construction began in September the same year.
On the Karvenagar side, major structural work including pillars, girders and the approach road has already been completed. Out of six pillars planned on the Suncity side, four have been erected, while work continues on the remaining supports. Construction of the span and gradient section on that side is still pending and is expected to be completed within two months.
Following completion of the main structure, finishing works such as road surfacing, lighting systems, drainage infrastructure and pedestrian pathways will be undertaken. The municipal special projects division is accelerating efforts to meet the proposed deadline. The bridge is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 44.86 crore.
Authorities believe the new link will ease pressure on existing routes including Rajaram Bridge and nearby stretches, improve traffic distribution, and shorten travel time between Sinhgad Road and Kothrud. Daily commuters, including students, professionals and local residents, are expected to benefit from improved connectivity and safer travel conditions.
According to project specifications, the bridge will measure 279 metres in length and 30 metres in width, with approach roads extending 34 metres on the Karvenagar side and 20 metres on the Suncity side. The structure consists of nine spans.
Officials added that once operational, the project is expected to strengthen intra-city connectivity and reduce daily traffic strain in Pune.
