Pune, 17th April 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to conduct a fresh survey of the properties affected by the acquisition of land required for the Mahatma Phule National Memorial. The decision comes as the civic body plans to compensate landowners and tenants for the displacement caused by the project.

The survey will involve detailed discussions with property owners and tenants in the area to determine the expected compensation they require. Based on these consultations, a comprehensive report will be prepared.

PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale shared this information on Wednesday. He also mentioned that a senior officer from the municipal service will be appointed to oversee the process of land acquisition. The goal is to acquire the necessary properties without resorting to forced land acquisition, while ensuring the landowners receive adequate compensation.

A survey of the area was initially conducted a few years ago, which identified around 91 properties that would be impacted by the project. This includes both landowners and tenants. While some landowners have requested an exchange of property, others have asked for cash compensation for their land and the rental properties.

The state government has decided to merge the Mahatma Phule Wada and the Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Memorial into one unified structure. This requires acquiring private land in the area, which will affect 91 properties with a total area of 5,310 square meters. Among the affected parties are 516 landowners and 285 tenants.

Dr. Bhosale emphasized that the PMC intends to minimize the need for forced land acquisition and will focus on reaching an amicable solution with all parties involved. If forced acquisition becomes necessary, the PMC will send a proposal to the district collector’s office to comply with the land acquisition laws.

The PMC is also preparing a study to assess the amount of compensation that will be required, as they continue their discussions with property owners and tenants. Dr. Bhosale clarified that all relevant instructions have been provided to the municipal administration for the execution of this process.
