Pune Traffic Police Crack Down on Tinted Car Windows and Illegal Number Plates; Over 2,200 Vehicles Penalised
Pune, 2nd July 2026: The Pune Traffic Police have intensified enforcement against vehicles violating regulations on window tinting and registration plates, taking action against more than 2,200 vehicles during a three-day special drive.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sandip Bhajibhakare said the campaign, launched on June 29, resulted in action against 707 four-wheelers fitted with prohibited tinted window films and 1,505 vehicles displaying non-compliant or decorative registration plates.
“As part of the enforcement drive, officers removed the illegal window films and unauthorised number plates immediately at the spot,” Bhajibhakare said, adding that the campaign was initiated after traffic personnel observed a growing number of vehicles flouting the prescribed norms.
According to the traffic police, many of the vehicles had dark films applied to the side windows and rear windshields, while others carried number plates with altered fonts, unusually small lettering or decorative elements that violated legal standards. Several registration plates also featured images such as bullock carts, religious symbols and depictions of deities, making them non-compliant with the prescribed format.
Police imposed a fine of ₹500 on first-time offenders, while those found violating the rules repeatedly were fined ₹1,500.
Bhajibhakare said the enforcement campaign will continue in the coming days, with traffic personnel instructed to take similar action wherever violations are detected.
He also urged motorists to install High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) on their vehicles and warned that stricter action would be taken against repeat offenders who continue to disregard the rules.
