Pune, 13th April 2023: Amidst the unrest and uproar caused by student organizations, the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has decided to form two committees to decide the fate of the first and second-year examinations at the college level. The SPPU’s decision, to be made formal by the recommendation of the two panels, comes as a breath of fresh air to the burdened and beleaguered examination and evaluation department of the university.

The first- and second-year examinations of non-professional bachelor courses in colleges affiliated to the SPPU will be planned at the college level, in adherence to the academic calendar. A meeting, held on a warm Wednesday morning, was conducted to discuss the issue at hand. It was decided that the entire planning of the written examinations, including the question papers, answer sheets, and the checking of marks, will be conducted at the college level. This marks a significant departure from the current norms and regulations, as the first-year examinations of non-professional degree courses such as Arts, Commerce, and Science of the university are currently held at the college level on an experimental basis.

The decision of the university comes at a crucial juncture, as the pandemic has caused a delay of five months in the academic year. The committees, headed by Dr Manohar Chaskar and Dr Vijay Khare, have been formed to look into the issue and make recommendations. The recommendations of the two panels will be submitted to the university, which will then make a formal decision in the examination board meeting. The transfer of the examination process to the college level is hoped to ease the burden on the SPPU’s examination and evaluation department, which has been grappling with a staff shortage.

Members of various student organizations have expressed their satisfaction and delight at the university’s decision, with Rahul Sasane, a PhD student and member of the University Students Sangharsh Committee, remarking that the decision will help lakhs of students, and will ensure that results are declared as per the academic schedule. Sachin Pandule, president of Yuvak Kranti Dal, echoed similar sentiments, expressing his support and appreciation for the SPPU’s decision.

Dr Mahesh Kakade, director of the board of examinations and evaluation, SPPU, expressed his approval and reiterated that the committees will be provided with the current status of the exams. He further stated that it would be appropriate to decentralize the examination process and hand over the first and second-year examinations to the colleges if the academic year is to start on August 1 and the results are to be declared on time.

Shubhankar Bachal, mahanagar mantri, ABVP, concurred with the decision, noting that even 45 days after the university exams, the results have not been released. He stated that transferring the examination process to the college level would help reduce stress on the examination department and ensure that results are declared as per the schedule.

As the committees look to plan the exams at the college level, the decision of the SPPU is hoped to be a turning point, a milestone in the history of the university, and an important step towards ensuring that students’ futures are secured and their academic lives are not interrupted.
