Pune, 5th November 2023: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is gearing up to implement the new National Education Policy (NEP), with a fresh syllabus ready for affiliated colleges in the upcoming academic year. The announcement of this course is scheduled in a phased manner on the university’s website after Diwali, post-November 15.

The implementation of the degree-level NEP in affiliated colleges faced a one-year delay due to inadequate preparations across the state.

Consequently, from the academic year 2024-25, four-year degree courses in arts, commerce, and science will commence in colleges affiliated with the university. The state steering committee’s plan, accepted by the university in July and approved by the Vidya Parishad in September, is now moving forward.

In accordance with the plan, institutes have formulated the required syllabus for the first year of the degree program. It will soon be accessible on the university website, with subsequent adjustments based on received suggestions. Despite the delay, students are set to experience a new syllabus.

With six months remaining before the new academic year begins, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. Parag Kalkar stated that training classes for professors will follow the syllabus announcement. He mentioned, “Training of subject teachers will be organized at the university level soon. Funds required for training the institutes have also been met. Necessary changes will be made after considering the suggestions after the syllabus is available on the website.”

The new grading system will follow a 60-40 formula, allocating 60% of the credits to core subjects and 40% to skill-based subjects in traditional courses. Colleges are now mandated to offer four-year degree courses encompassing skills, value-based courses, and practical work experience. The university is actively working to enhance the optional subjects for the 40 credits.

Dr. Parag Kalkar emphasized key points:

The degree duration for the upcoming academic year will be four years.

The four-year plan and first-year syllabus have been prepared.

Adjustments will be made based on faculty training and suggestions over the next six months.

Students can pursue vocational training alongside traditional degrees.
