Pune, 28th October 2026: Pune police have withdrawn the security cover provided to Vidyanand Bapat, who came into the spotlight for opposing loud DJ music during festivals, following a review of security arrangements for prominent individuals in the city.

The decision to withdraw police protection from 20 people was taken at a Special Branch meeting on October 23 after officials found that they no longer required security. Those affected include builders, industrialists, a political analyst and film producers.

Bapat had been provided round-the-clock police protection after a man allegedly attacked him while he was giving an interview to a private news channel ahead of the Ganesh festival. Police reviewed his security arrangements and concluded that continued protection was no longer necessary.

Meanwhile, police have decided to retain the Y-plus escort security cover provided to Baramati-based industrialist Rana Suryawanshi, who was attacked near Baramati airport. No changes have been made to his security arrangements.

The police protection committee reviews the security requirements of prominent and high-profile individuals every two months under the supervision of the police commissioner. Decisions on providing or withdrawing security are taken based on the assessment.
