Pune, 18th August 2021: A 51-year-old woman suffered intracranial haemorrhage and was declared brain dead by doctors at the KEM Hospital in Pune on 15th August.
“Her 21-year-old son and close relatives gave the consent to donate all her organs. With such an act, the family facilitated this year’s 20th multiorgan donation, which aims to give the gift of life to patients who are in dire need”, said Aarti Gokhale, Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) coordinator of Pune.
The lungs of the woman were urgently flown to MGM hospital Chennai with the help of the airport authorities, her liver was sent to Aditya Birla Hospital Pune, while her kidneys were sent to Ruby Hall Clinic. The organs donated were allocated as per criteria laid down by the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization(SOTTO), Regional Organ and tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO), and the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).
Rohini Sahasrabudhe, Transplant Coordinator, KEM Hospital, told PunekarNews.in, “It was a very difficult decision for the son to make, being the only child, to donate his mother’s organs. Initially, there was some debate among the relatives of the family on whether to donate or not, but the final decision was made by the 21-year-old son. The attitudes among the younger generation towards organ donation are certainly changing in a positive direction. There is an encouraging trend and Pune has certainly picked up on organ donation, compared to the past.“
According to ZTCC, there are currently 1600 patients waiting for a kidney transplant, 75 for a liver transplant, and 50 for lung transplants.
