Sant Tukaram Maharaj Beej Pilgrimage: Authorities Warn Against Drinking Indrayani River Water Amid Health Concerns

Dehu, 15th March 2025: Pune district authorities have issued crucial directives for devotees participating in the Sant Tukaram Maharaj Beej Pilgrimage from 14th March to 16th March. Every year, thousands of Warkaris take a holy dip in the Indrayani River and consider its water sacred for consumption. However, this year, the administration has strictly prohibited drinking or using river water for cooking due to safety concerns.
The decision comes in light of the massive crowd expected and concerns over the quality of the river water. Officials have declared that water from both banks of the Indrayani is unfit for drinking and cooking purposes, as there is a high risk of contamination.
In the official order, the district administration has clarified that devotees should use Indrayani’s water only for bathing, washing utensils, or other non-consumable purposes. For drinking, pilgrims must rely on public water supply facilities provided at designated locations.
Authorities have also urged devotees to ensure that their activities do not contribute to further contamination of the river. Specific guidelines prohibit washing clothes or engaging in any activities that might pollute the water. Strict action will be taken against those violating these directives.
The Sant Tukaram Maharaj Beej Pilgrimage holds immense spiritual significance for the Warkari community, attracting thousands of devotees each year. Given this large gathering, the administration is responsible for maintaining hygiene and ensuring public health. Contaminated water could lead to the spread of diseases, making this preventive measure necessary.
Officials have emphasized the importance of following these guidelines for the safety and well-being of all participants. The administration expects the event to be conducted in an orderly and disciplined manner, with full cooperation from the Warkari community.
