Vadgaonsheri, 26th July 2023: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former union Minister Vijay Goel visited Pune’s Bramha SunCity yesterday to address the long-standing concerns of the housing society, which has been grappling with a severe stray dog menace for several years.

The Bramha SunCity society has been facing a significant increase in the stray dog population, with their numbers surging from a few dogs to over 60-70 in the last decade. Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of effective sterilization drives conducted by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which has resulted in uncontrolled breeding and relocation of dogs into the premises illegally.

The stray dog issue has escalated to the point where the society’s amenities and common areas, including playgrounds, parks, walkways, swimming pool, and parking lots, were overrun by the dogs. This infestation led to repeated attacks on residents, with a particularly distressing incident where a small child was bitten by a pack of aggressive stray dogs on 7th Feb 2023, sustaining a category 3 bite.

In response to the growing concerns of the residents, the PMC took action to remove the aggressive dogs from the premises. However, an NGO activist, not even a resident of the society, obtained an order from the Bombay High Court to release the dogs back into the area, citing the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules. Faced with this setback, the society appealed to the Supreme Court and received a stay on the High Court’s order. Several other individuals and communities across India, facing similar issues, have joined hands with Bramha SunCity in their pursuit for a resolution.

Having observed the proactive campaign led by Vijay Goel against stray dog attacks and the advocacy for the welfare of homeless dogs, Nagendra Rampuria, a resident of Bramha SunCity, reached out to the senior leader in Delhi to seek assistance in addressing the escalating animal-human conflicts.

During his visit to Pune, Vijay Goel, accompanied by former BJP city Unit President Shri Jagdish Mulik and Ex PMC Standing Committee Chairman Shri Yogesh Mulik, visited Bramha SunCity to interact with the residents and discuss possible solutions to the stray dog menace.

Addressing the gathering of nearly 500 residents, which included senior citizens, mothers, children, and society staff from various societies in Pune and Mumbai, Vijay Goel emphasized the need for a 10-point program to combat the issue effectively. His proposed program included measures such as 100 percent sterilization of stray dogs, administering anti-rabies injections, establishing permanent shelter homes for strays, dealing with frequently biting dogs, implementing an efficient dog adoption policy, and providing compensation and free treatment to victims of dog bites.

Residents also took the opportunity to raise their concerns about safety, health, and the harassment they faced due to false cases filed by dog feeders.
