Baramati, 5th February 2026: Senior leader Sharad Pawar expressed satisfaction over Sunetra Pawar’s swearing-in as Deputy Chief Minister, describing it as a proud moment for the family and party supporters, even as they continue to mourn the recent loss of Ajit Pawar.

Speaking at a press conference at Govind Baug in Baramati, Pawar said the family and party cadre are still passing through an emotionally difficult phase. He emphasized that the current priority is to support one another and determine the way forward. “This is not the time for political discussions,” he said.

When asked about social media criticism directed at NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare regarding the timing of the oath-taking ceremony, Pawar chose not to respond.

Addressing questions about the possibility of a memorial for Ajit Pawar, Sharad Pawar clarified that no formal discussions have taken place so far. Referring to reports about land being considered, he noted that as president of the concerned institution, he would be aware of any such move. “All trustees will meet and decide collectively. At present, it is not appropriate to deliberate on the memorial,” he stated.

Pawar also urged restraint regarding speculation surrounding the aircraft crash that claimed Ajit Pawar’s life. He said raising doubts before official findings are released would be inappropriate. “We should wait for confirmed information,” he remarked.

Reacting to comments made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis about potential merger discussions within the Nationalist Congress Party, Pawar responded sharply, saying the Chief Minister had no involvement in such internal matters. He questioned the basis on which such references were being made.

Views on Budget and International Trade
Commenting on the Union Budget, Pawar said it was a relief that no additional taxes burdening common citizens had been introduced, though he added that stronger measures to speed up national development were expected.

On India–US trade relations, he observed that while certain tariff relaxations had been announced by the United States, the broader impact would become clearer in the coming days. He cautioned that provisions concerning agricultural exports might raise concerns for Indian farmers.

Remarks on Former Army Chief’s Writings:
Responding to political references to writings by former Army Chief General Manoj Naravane, Pawar said such discussions were legitimate. He added that perspectives from a former Army Chief could help shed light on national issues and contribute to informed debate.
