Mumbai, 20th April 2023: The State Board Schools in Maharashtra will be closed from tomorrow due to the extreme heat conditions prevailing in the state, announced School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar. While addressing the media, he emphasized the need to protect the students from the scorching heat and declared a holiday for all state board schools.

In another development, the State Government has made Marathi language compulsory in all medium schools from the sixth standard. The only exception has been granted to the current batch of Class VIII in Central Board schools, who have been given a concession of marks.

Speaking to the press, Kesarkar clarified that the decision to make Marathi subject compulsory had not been taken lightly and was in line with the government’s policy to promote local languages.

However, since it is the time of COVID, the students studying in Class VIII this year are learning the Marathi language subject for the first time. Therefore, it has been decided to convert the examination of Marathi subject into a category for these students from Class VIII of 2022-23 till Class X in the year 2024-25 as a one-time matter. The Minister also mentioned that this would not affect the current batch of students’ marks in any way.

The next academic year is scheduled to commence from June 15, while schools in Vidarbha will start from June 30. However, considering the prevailing heatwave, the State Board schools have been given a holiday from tomorrow. The Minister suggested that schools should conduct extra activities during vacations in morning or evening sessions for students of Class 9 or 10, but other students should be allowed to enjoy their vacation without any burden of studies.

The decision to close the schools due to extreme heat has been welcomed by parents and students, who have been struggling to cope with the scorching temperatures. The announcement of making Marathi compulsory in all medium schools has received mixed reactions, with some welcoming the move while others feel that it might put additional pressure on the students.
