Visakhapatnam, 10th March 2025: Vizianagaram MP Kalisetti Appala Naidu has introduced a distinctive scheme to encourage population growth and gender equity in his constituency.

During a Women’s Day event, he announced that families welcoming a third girl child would receive a ₹50,000 fixed deposit, while those having a third boy would be gifted a cow with a calf. The initiative aims to address declining birth rates in southern India while promoting financial stability for families.

Speaking at the event, Naidu said, “The Indian population needs to rise. This initiative supports gender equality and ensures economic sustainability.” He credited his mother, wife, sisters, and daughter as his inspiration for introducing the scheme and emphasized the importance of empowering women.

According to Naidu, the fixed deposit for girls would provide financial security by the time they reach marriageable age, helping families save for their future. Meanwhile, gifting cows to families with boys is intended to promote rural livelihoods and self-sufficiency.

The MP’s announcement aligns with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s call to address ageing demographics and declining fertility rates in Andhra Pradesh.

The state has been witnessing a gradual drop in its population growth rate over the past decade, prompting policymakers to explore measures encouraging larger families. Naidu believes such initiatives can help balance demographic challenges while addressing societal biases against women.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among residents and experts. While some have praised the scheme as a progressive step toward gender equity and economic empowerment, others have raised concerns about its practicality and long-term impact on societal norms.

Critics argue that offering financial incentives may not be enough to address deeply rooted issues like gender discrimination or economic disparities. Additionally, questions remain about how the scheme will be implemented and whether it will be extended to other parts of the state.

Naidu also highlighted ongoing discrimination against women in rural areas and stressed the need for collective efforts to ensure their progress. “We must create an environment where daughters are celebrated and supported,” he added. The MP urged local authorities and community leaders to spread awareness about the scheme and encourage families to participate.

This initiative is part of broader discussions on maternity benefits and family welfare schemes in Andhra Pradesh, reflecting growing concerns over population dynamics in the region.
