Train Fares Increased from 26 December; Sleeper and AC Classes See 2 Paise per Km Hike
New Delhi, 26th December 2025: Indian Railways has rationalised its passenger fare structure with effect from December 26, 2025, introducing calibrated fare increases across select non-suburban passenger services while retaining existing fares for suburban travel and Season Tickets.
According to the revised structure, there is no change in fares for suburban services and all Season Tickets, covering both suburban and non-suburban routes.
For Ordinary Non-AC (Non-Suburban) services, fares have been revised in a graded manner across Second Class Ordinary, Sleeper Class Ordinary, and First Class Ordinary categories.
In Second Class Ordinary, fares remain unchanged for journeys up to 215 km. For distances between 216 km and 750 km, fares have increased by ₹5. For longer distances, the increase is applied in slabs: ₹10 for journeys between 751 km and 1250 km, ₹15 for 1251 km to 1750 km, and ₹20 for 1751 km to 2250 km.
In Sleeper Class Ordinary and First Class Ordinary, fares for non-suburban journeys have been uniformly revised at the rate of 1 paise per kilometre.
For Mail/Express trains, fares across both Non-AC and AC classes—including Sleeper Class, First Class, AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier and AC First Class—have been increased at a uniform rate of 2 paise per kilometre. As per railway estimates, a passenger travelling 500 km in a non-AC Mail/Express coach will pay approximately ₹10 more.
The revised fare structure has also been applied to major train services such as Tejas Rajdhani, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Tejas, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, Namo Bharat Rapid Rail, and Ordinary non-suburban services, in line with approved class-wise basic fare increases. AC MEMU and DEMU services are excluded where applicable.
Indian Railways has clarified that reservation fees, superfast surcharges, and other ancillary charges remain unchanged. GST applicability will continue as per existing rules, and fares will be rounded off according to prevailing norms.
The revised fares will apply only to tickets booked on or after December 26, 2025. Tickets booked before this date will not attract any additional charges, even if the journey is undertaken after the revision comes into effect.
Fare lists displayed at railway stations will be updated to reflect the revised fares effective from 26.12.2025.
