Twitter Banned 46,000 Indian Accounts In May, Here’s What They Were Doing

New Delhi, 3rd July 2022: Twitter banned more than 46,000 accounts of Indian users in May for violating its guidelines, the microblogging platform confirmed in its monthly compliance report on Sunday.

 

According to the report, Twitter has banned 43,656 accounts for child sexual abuse, non-consensual nudity, and similar content while 2,870 accounts have been banned for promoting terrorism.

 

1,698 complaints received in India

The platform received 1,698 complaints in India between April 26, 2022, and May 25, 2022, through its local grievance mechanism. This includes complaints related to online abuse/harassment (1,366), hateful conduct (111), misinformation and manipulated media (36), sensitive adult content (28), and impersonation (25).

 

The platform also took action against 1,621 Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) during this period, including URLs violating norms related to online harassment (1,077), hateful conduct (362), and sensitive adult content (154).

 

In addition, Twitter also acted on 115 complaints that appealed for account suspension. The report said that no account suspension was cancelled.

 

Inappropriate behavior on the platform cannot be tolerated – Twitter

Twitter said in the report, “While we welcome everyone to express themselves on our platform, we do not tolerate behavior that threatens, dehumanises, or uses fear to suppress others’ voices.”

 

Meanwhile, according to the Monthly Transparency Report on Sunday, Google India removed 393,303 harmful content in May through automated detection to curb the spread of harmful content such as child sexual abuse and violent extremist content.

 

WhatsApp Banned 1.9 Million Accounts

In May, Whatsapp also removed 62,673 pieces of content as a result of user complaints. On Friday, META-owned WhatsApp also announced that it has banned over 1.9 million bad accounts in India for the month of May in compliance with the new IT Rules 2021. The platform banned over 16.6 lakh bad accounts in India in April. The company also received 528 complaint reports in May within the country, and “actionable” accounts were 24. In April, WhatsApp received 844 complaints within the country, and “actionable” accounts were 123.

 

The report comes under the new rule

Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with over 5 million users are required to publish monthly compliance reports.
