United Nations, 28th February 2022: The war between Russia and Ukraine continues. Citizens of Ukraine are constantly fleeing the country. Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency quoted the UN as saying that more than half a million people have fled Ukraine since Russia’s invasion last week. The head of the United Nations High Commission for Refugee Affairs (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi gave this information by tweeting.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokeswoman Shabia Mantoo said, “281,000 people were entering Poland, 84,500 in Hungary, about 36,400 in Moldova, more than 32,500 in Romania and about 30,000 in Slovakia.”
She further said, “the rest are entering other countries. According to reports, another train carrying hundreds of refugees from Ukraine reached the city of Przemysl in southeastern Poland early Monday. During this, some people waved to the cameras and showed that they were relieved to be out of the war zone. Many were on the phone.”
On the other hand, Russia’s military has said, “people from the Ukrainian capital can use the secure corridor if they want to leave the city.”
Major General Igor Koveshnikov, the spokesman for Russia’s defense ministry, said on Monday “the residents of Kyiv could use the highway leading to Vlasilkiv, which is located southwest of the Ukrainian capital.”
The statement came when Ukrainian officials said they were fighting in small groups with Russian forces in different areas of the capital.
Koveshnikov alleged that Ukraine’s “nationalists” were deploying military equipment to shield the city’s residents. These allegations could not be independently verified. Koveshnikov also announced that Russian troops had gained control of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant. He said, “the plant was safe and the radiation level in the area remained normal.”
