Pune, 21 July 2021: On one hand when the Pune city is waiting for years together to get its sanctioned water storage, on the other hand, there have been half TMC increase in water demand every year by the residents.

Water theft and leakage too is a big problem for many years.

The population of the city is 45 lakh. The city gets its water supply from the Khadakwasla dam. Nearly, 2.65 TMC water is available from Bhama Askhed dam. The irrigation department and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had a water treaty but it has been 20 years ago which has remained unchanged. Meanwhile, the population of the city has increased many folds.

The city did face water cuts. Migration owing to industry, business, jobs, and education is high in the city. This has increased the water demand too. Similarly, 35 new villages have been merged into PMC. Currently, the city needs 18.57 TMC water and it is increasing by half TMC every year.
