Water Crisis Looms Over Pune: MP Supriya Sule Calls for Halt in Construction Activities
Pune, 25th November 2023: Pune is set to face a severe water crisis in the coming days, prompting the need for comprehensive planning to address both drinking water and irrigation requirements. The constant influx of new constructions in the city has aggravated the situation, leading Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency MP Supriya Sule to advocate for a temporary halt in construction activities due to pollution concerns.
Sule took a decisive stance during a review meeting at the Municipal Corporation yesterday, focusing on issues pertinent to the Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency. A subsequent press conference saw the presence of NCP city president Prashant Jagtap, former standing committee chairman Vishal Tambe, former corporator Sachin Dodke, and Kaka Chavan. The meeting centered on solid waste management, water, and road-related challenges.
Addressing the gathering, Sule expressed deep concern about the escalating problem of drinking water scarcity in the city. The municipal administration presented alarming statistics on the current water status, highlighting the urgency of meticulous planning for both drinking water and irrigation needs amid the impending summer and depleting water resources.
Sule acknowledged the necessity of responsible development but emphasized the need for a pause in construction activities. With pollution on the rise and new constructions requiring significant water resources, she posed the critical question of how to sustainably manage these demands.
Asserting the importance of proactive water planning by the state government, Sule warned of potential agitation within the municipal building if suitable measures are not promptly taken. Despite ongoing efforts like the Equal Water Supply Scheme, which aims to provide water equitably, citizens are reportedly not reaping the intended benefits. Sule raised concerns about the absence of municipal elections for one and a half years, asserting that the management of the municipal corporation by officials is insufficient to address citizens’ issues effectively.
