WC 2023: South Africa Grinds Out Thrilling Win Against Pakistan, Secures Top Spot in Points Table

Chennai, 27th October 2023: In a thrilling encounter at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, South Africa clinched victory against Pakistan in the 26th ODI of the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023. The match went down to the wire as South Africa beat Pakistan by just 1 wicket with 16 balls left, securing their place at the top of the points table.

Winning the toss, Pakistan opted to bat first. Captain Babar Azam scored 50 runs in 65 balls before being caught by Quinton de Kock on a Tabraiz Shamsi delivery. Saud Shakeel contributed 52 runs off 52 balls before being caught again by Quinton de Kock, this time again off Tabraiz Shamsi. Shadab Khan added 43 runs from 36 balls before Keshav Maharaj caught him on a Gerald Coetzee delivery. Pakistan was all out for 270 runs in the 47th over, with contributions from Mohammad Rizwan and Mohammad Nawaz.

Tabraiz Shamsi shone with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 60 runs in his 10 overs, supported by Marco Jansen’s 3 wickets, Gerald Coetzee’s 2, and Lungi Ngidi’s 1.

Chasing a target of 271 runs, South Africa made a strong start with openers Captain Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock contributing significantly. Aiden Markram played a crucial innings, scoring 91 runs from 93 balls before being caught by Babar Azam on an Usama Mir delivery. Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and Marco Jansen, along with efforts from lower-order and tail-end batsmen, led South Africa to a dramatic win, securing their position as the points table leaders. From Pakistan’s bowling side, Shaheen Afridi took 3 wickets in his 10 overs, conceding 45 runs, while Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Jr., and Usama Mir took 2 wickets each.

With 5 wins out of 6 matches, South Africa now leads the points table, although they are tied in points with India, their superior net run rate gives them the top spot. Meanwhile, Pakistan has won 2 and lost 4 matches, facing a tough challenge to qualify for the knockout stage.

The next matches in the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 are set for tomorrow. The first fixture will be played between Australia and New Zealand at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala, marking the 27th match of the tournament. The second game features Bangladesh against the Netherlands at Eden Gardens, hosting its first game of the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023.
