Pune, 9th December 2024: Cyclone Fengal’s impact has significantly disrupted Maharashtra’s weather, with minimum temperatures across the state rising 5-6 degrees Celsius above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In Pune, the nights have been warmer than usual. On Sunday, the minimum temperature at Shivajinagar was 16.4°C, 5 degrees above normal, while Lohegaon recorded 17.6°C, exceeding the average by 6.2 degrees. This trend is expected to persist, with night temperatures in Pune likely to remain above normal until December 14, except on December 12 and 13, when the mercury may drop to 11°C, IMD officials stated.

“Temperatures will stabilize in the range of 12-14°C in the coming days as northerly winds gradually penetrate various parts of the state,” an IMD spokesperson explained. “This influx of cooler winds will help bring down the minimum temperatures.”

The elevated temperatures are primarily due to an increase in moisture levels, caused by Cyclone Fengal’s influence, said another meteorologist. “The cyclone’s residual effect is evident in the consistently higher night temperatures across the state, except in some Konkan stations,” the official noted.

Jalgaon Records Maharashtra State’s Lowest Temperature
Jalgaon registered the lowest minimum temperature in Maharashtra on Sunday at 10°C, while Niphad in Nashik district, known for its grape cultivation, followed at 11.7°C. Jalgaon’s nighttime temperatures have seen a significant drop of 8.8°C over the past five days, from 18.8°C on December 3 to Sunday’s 10°C.

Niphad experienced a dramatic fluctuation, with the minimum temperature plunging to 7°C on November 30—the season’s lowest—before climbing to 22°C on December 4. Since then, it has steadily decreased to 11.7°C.

Ahmednagar recorded a minimum of 15.5°C on Sunday, while Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Kolhapur logged 16°C and 21.8°C, respectively.
IMD officials expect nighttime temperatures across Maharashtra to normalize as the cyclone’s effects wane and colder northern winds settle in over the coming week.
