WhatsApp Launches Advanced Chat Privacy Feature to Block Media Downloads and Chat Exports

Pune, 24th April 2025: WhatsApp has introduced a new “Advanced Chat Privacy” feature for iOS and Android users, adding an extra security layer to block media auto-downloads and prevent chat exports outside the app. The update aims to enhance user privacy, particularly in group chats with unknown participants, by restricting unauthorized content sharing.
HOW IT WORKS?
The feature, now rolling out globally, allows users to disable media downloads and block chat exports via email or third-party apps. Once enabled, participants cannot forward chats or save media outside WhatsApp, ensuring sensitive discussions remain confined to the platform. Meta-owned WhatsApp emphasized that the tool is designed for users seeking stricter control over confidential conversations, such as business groups or private discussions.
WHY IT MATTERS?
The update addresses growing concerns about digital privacy, particularly after incidents of chat leaks impacting businesses and individuals. WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption already secures messages, but the new feature adds a critical layer against human-driven breaches.
HOW TO ACTIVATE?
Open the target chat (individual or group).
Tap the chat name > Advanced Chat Privacy.
Toggle “Block Media Downloads” and “Restrict Chat Export”.
The feature is available on WhatsApp’s latest version (v2.25.10+) for Android and iOS.
