Pune, 10 July 2023: Disturbing reports have emerged regarding multiple alleged incidents of rape at a care home, where three women with learning disabilities were said to have been victims. Pune Rural Police have stated that a contractual laborer employed at the institution is believed to be responsible for these heinous acts. Following the victims’ disclosure of the incidents to staff and counselors at the facility, the accused was promptly arrested.

Three separate First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed at a police station under Pune Rural Police jurisdiction in the early hours of July 8, highlighting the severity of the situation. The suspect, identified as Subhash Zore (35), had been engaged in construction work, including fencing, at the care home since May. Residing in close proximity to the institution, Zore was taken into custody by the police.

Authorities have revealed that two of the victims are 24 years old, while the third is 30. Initial investigations suggest that the assaults occurred at different times during the first week of July within the premises of the care home. The incidents came to light when the three women bravely confided in staff members and counselors, prompting the institute authorities to promptly inform the police.

A senior officer from Pune Rural Police stated, “The accused was arrested a few hours later after the institute authorities approached us on the evening of July 7 and an FIR was registered in the early hours of July 8.”

Medical care and counseling support are being provided to the victims by professionals, who are helping them through this traumatic experience.

The police have invoked sections 376(2)(l) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to the rape of a woman with mental or physical disabilities, as well as section 376(2)(n) on the repeated rape of a woman, in all three cases. Additionally, in one of the incidents, the police have invoked the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as the victim belongs to the SC community.

This deeply distressing incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and support systems for vulnerable individuals within care homes. Authorities are fully committed to ensuring a thorough investigation and delivering justice to the survivors of these horrifying acts.
