Nashik: Fraudulent Parking Syndicate Allegedly Targeting Pilgrims at Trimbakeshwar Temple
Reported by Amit Singh
Nashik, 1st July 2025: A formal complaint has been submitted to Nashik district authorities, alleging the presence of an organized parking extortion syndicate near the Trimbakeshwar Temple that is reportedly deceiving and harassing pilgrims.
The incident occurred on June 29 near the main entry point to the temple, a prominent religious site in Maharashtra. According to the complaint addressed to the Nashik Collector and senior police officials, individuals wearing raincoats resembling police or civic uniforms intercepted vehicles and directed pilgrims to what was presented as “authorized parking” in exchange for ₹300.
The location, situated 800–900 meters from the temple, had numerous vehicles already parked, obscuring any signage and giving the appearance of legitimacy. The complainant described a coordinated operation where different individuals assigned themselves various roles to confuse and pressure visitors.
Upon returning from the temple, pilgrims allegedly found their vehicles wheel-jammed with a notice affixed—bearing an unresponsive contact number. Attempts to seek help from the nearby police station and municipal office were reportedly unsuccessful, as the latter was closed. Eventually, a Dial 112 call led to a visit from a police officer accompanied by a towing vehicle. The penalty demanded for the alleged parking violation was initially ₹1,000 but was negotiated to ₹500 and paid online.
According to the complaint, local police acknowledged receiving similar reports in the past. Video and photo evidence was submitted to support the allegations.
The key issues raised include:
- Individuals impersonating officials through deceptive attire.
- Lack of visible police presence during peak pilgrimage hours.
- Absence of clear and visible signage.
- Use of barricades controlled by private individuals.
- Distress caused to vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children.
The complainant has requested a detailed investigation, installation of clear signage, public advisories for visitors, and strict legal action against the perpetrators. The matter holds particular urgency with the upcoming Sawan and Maha Kumbh seasons, when pilgrim footfall is expected to surge significantly.
