Pune, 22nd July 2025: In a major step towards strengthening urban infrastructure in Pune’s expanded municipal limits, the central government has approved ₹533.85 crore for sewage networks and treatment plants in 16 of the 23 merged villages, under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme.

The projects were cleared by the Maharashtra Life Authority on Monday, followed by final approval from the technical committee of the Urban Development Department on Tuesday. Official government orders are expected to be issued shortly.

Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram informed that a total of 471 km of connecting sewage channels, 90.5 km of main sewage lines, and 12 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) will be constructed to manage wastewater across the merged villages. The total projected cost for the complete sewage infrastructure in all 23 villages is ₹1,437 crore.

Villages Approved Under Current Funding:
Sus, Mhalunge, Narhe, Pisoli, Sanasnagar, Kondhave Dhavde, Kirkitwadi, Nandoshi, Khadakwasla, New Kopre, Nanded, Bhilarewadi, Gujar Nimbalkarwadi, Jambhulwadi, Kolewadi, Mangdewadi
Awaiting Technical Approval (Remaining 7 Villages):
Bavdhan, Autadewadi-Handewadi, Holkarwadi, Wadachiwadi, Wagholi, Shewalewadi, Manjari Bu.
A separate proposal of ₹856.91 crore has been prepared for these villages and is currently under review.

While officials and local representatives are celebrating the development, the timing of the approval—on the birthdays of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar—has raised political eyebrows, with some calling it a strategic “birthday gift” amid the backdrop of the upcoming Pune Municipal Corporation elections.

Nevertheless, the move is expected to bring significant improvement in sanitation, environmental management, and urban development for the rapidly growing suburbs now under Pune Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction.
