Ashok Chavan’s Departure Adds to Congress Exits in Maharashtra, Following Milind Deora and Baba Siddique
Nanded, 12th February 2024: Ashok Chavan’s decision to step down from the Congress party, similar to the recent exits of other notable leaders like Milind Deora and Baba Siddique, presents a significant setback for the party’s position in Maharashtra, especially with the upcoming general and state elections looming. Chavan, a former chief minister and Member of Parliament opted to resign from the party’s primary membership amidst speculation about his potential move to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with rumours swirling about a possible nomination to the Rajya Sabha. Despite engaging in discussions with the BJP, Chavan has yet to finalize his decision on joining another political faction, citing dissatisfaction with the delayed seat-sharing arrangements within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance.
Having represented the Bhokar constituency in the Assembly, Chavan tendered his resignation to Speaker Rahul Narvekar. His potential switch to the BJP would mark another significant shift in Maharashtra’s political landscape, following Milind Deora’s recent decision to join the Shiv Sena. It’s reported that Chavan’s disagreements with state party chief Nana Patole over candidate selection may have influenced his exploration of alternative political options.
As the son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan, Ashok Chavan holds considerable sway in the Nanded region, which could impact electoral dynamics. His departure underscores the challenges faced by the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, comprising factions of the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress, as they gear up for a rigorous electoral contest.
Chavan’s political trajectory, spanning from student leadership to state minister and chief minister, reflects his extensive involvement in Congress politics. Despite assuming the chief ministerial role following Vilasrao Deshmukh’s resignation in the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, his tenure was tarnished by corruption allegations related to the Adarsh Housing Society scam, leading to his resignation.
In response to Chavan’s resignation, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh used a metaphorical “washing machine” analogy, criticizing the perceived allure of defecting to the BJP. Ramesh expressed regret over the departure of party colleagues, attributing it to opportunism rather than ideological commitment or personal loyalty while highlighting the potential for revitalization within the party ranks following such departures.
