Big Crackdown: Govt Orders Action in 424 Pune Land Irregularities
Pune, 25th March 2026: The Maharashtra government has identified serious irregularities in 424 cases in Pune district involving alleged misuse of provisions under the Maharashtra Land Revenue Act. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Tuesday announced strict action, including suspension of erring officials, in a statement in the Legislative Council.
The irregularities came to light following an inquiry conducted by a committee headed by the Nashik Divisional Commissioner. The panel was tasked with examining orders passed over the past five years under Section 155 of the Act. Out of 38,027 cases screened, documents were available for 2,337 cases, of which 424 were found to involve illegal procedures.
These cases have been categorised into three groups — ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ — based on severity. In 13 highly serious ‘A’ category cases, the government will consider suspension and criminal action against those responsible after seeking legal opinion. The committee has also recommended immediate suspension of officials involved in more than 30 such cases.
To provide relief to affected parties, the government has decided to undertake a suo motu review of all such cases through senior officers. Original property records will be restored within six months, officials said.
In addition, officers responsible for serious irregularities under the ‘B’ category will be transferred out of the Pune division to non-executive posts.
The state government will also launch a similar probe across Maharashtra by constituting committees on the lines of the Nashik panel. These committees are expected to submit reports within six months, Bawankule said.
