Pune, June 6, 2020: The 347th anniversary of the coronation ceremony of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shivrajyabhishek, was celebrated at Raigad fort today with the chanting of Mantras and Shankhnad (blowing of holy conch). In the backdrop of the Coronavirus pandemic, very few people were present for the ceremony. However, despite this, the ceremony was held in a very pompous manner.

The ceremony was organised by All India Shiv Rajyabhishek Utsav Samiti Durgaraj Raigad. President of Fort Raigad Authority Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje and Yuvraj Shahaji Raje Bhosale of Kolhapur were present on this occasion.

The ceremony started with Gadpujan (worship of the fort) in the afternoon. After this, Shirkai Devi was worshipped. The main function of the coronation ceremony had started at 6 am. Saffron flag was hoisted in the city hall area in the morning. After this, the salute was paid to Maharaj at the royal palace. Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje arrived at the palace at around 9.30 am. After this, the seated statue of Shivaji Maharaj in Meghadambari was anointed with gold coins. Later, the idol of Shivaji Maharaj was ritually worshipped by bathing it in Panchamrit and Saptaganga. At this time, Shiva Aarti was recited.

Every year, thousands of people from all over the state come to attend this ceremony which has become a festival now, but considering the prevalence of COVID-19, this year, the festival was attended by a smaller group of people.

On this day, 347 years ago: On this day 347 years ago, Shivaji Bhonsle, founder of the great Maratha Empire, was coronated as’ Chhatrapati (Emperor) at Raigad. A fierce warrior and the Mughals’ worst nightmare, he was a secular ruler.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj sat on the throne, ornamented with emblems and auspicious materials. Gaga Bhatt, a Hindu scholar conducted the ceremony. Maharaj was bestowed upon the title of ‘Kshatriya Kulavantas Chhatrapati Raje Shivaji’. The crowd sang praises. Musical instruments were played in honour of their new King, military artillery was fired as well. Following which, Gaga Bhatt facilitated and carried the golden umbrella over Shivaji’s head.

What made this Coronation so special?

A ‘Chhatrapati’ means a Lord (pati) deserving of a Chhatra (umbrella), meaning a person worthy of a ceremonial umbrella. However, only a few kings were given this title of ‘Supreme king’. The word ‘Chhatrapati’ also means someone who ensures the welfare of the people under his shade.

Usually, the Coronation of any king was supposed to be approved by the Mughal Emperors, but this time, Shivaji Maharaj dared the Mughal authority. Hence, Shivaji Maharaj was formally proclaimed as the independent King of the Maratha Empire.

What made this Crowning necessary?

After acquiring extensive land and wealth through his conquests, Maharaj still lacked the formal title. Hence, the Coronation was necessary for winning the support of other Maratha leaders. It is said that approximately 50,000 people had gathered at Raigad for the coronation ceremony.

Furthermore, the conflicts between Muslim rulers in Deccan and the weak governance made Shivaji Maharaj even more confident about his rule and emergence. Not only was he looked upon by the Hindus, but the Muslims also loved him because of his impartiality to all sects. Also, his respect towards women made people recognise him as their true leader. Not to forget, his brilliant military skills which made him even mightier than ever.
