Drop in Vegetable Prices at Pune’s Market Yard Amid Increased Arrivals

Pune, 29th December 2024: Prices of vegetables such as tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, shevga (drumsticks), and pavta (field beans) have decreased in Pune’s Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard due to increased arrivals. Traders also reported that the prices of most other fruits and vegetables remain stable.

On Sunday, 90 to 100 trucks carrying fruits and vegetables arrived at the wholesale market from Maharashtra and other states. According to senior commissioning agent Vilas Bhujbal, the arrivals included:

  • Green chillies: 10-12 tempos from Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh
  • Cabbage: 4-5 tempos from Karnataka and Gujarat
  • Pavta and ghevda (beans): 5-6 tempos each from Karnataka
  • Shevga (drumsticks): 5 tempos from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu
  • Carrots: 10 tempos from Rajasthan
  • Peas: 18-20 trucks from Madhya Pradesh
  • Totapuri mango (kairi): 1 tempo from Tamil Nadu
  • Garlic: 7-8 tempos from Madhya Pradesh

Local produce from the Pune division also saw significant arrivals, including 10-12 thousand boxes of tomatoes, 5-6 tempos each of guava and okra, 8-10 tempos of cucumber, 14-15 tempos of cauliflower, and 90-100 trucks of onions.

Changes in Vegetable Prices

While the prices of most vegetables remained steady, there was a slight increase in coriander, shepu (dill), and gram bag prices. In contrast, the prices of roots and spinach decreased. The wholesale market rates (per hundred pairs) for leafy vegetables are as follows:

  • Coriander: ₹500-1,000
  • Fenugreek: ₹500-800
  • Spinach: ₹800-1,200
  • Roots: ₹600-1,000
  • Mint: ₹300-800
  • Safflower: ₹300-700
  • Amaranth: ₹400-700

Fruit Market Update

In the fruit section, the prices of papaya, pomegranate, and lemon have increased, while the rates of watermelon, muskmelon, custard apple, orange, mosambi (sweet lime), guava, and boras remain stable. On Sunday, the market saw arrivals of:

  • Mosambi: 40-50 tons of old and new crops
  • Oranges: 70-80 tons
  • Pomegranate: 20-25 tons
  • Papaya: 7-8 tempos
  • Lemons: 1,300 sacks
  • Pineapple: 6 trucks

Traders highlighted that the high arrivals are contributing to the stable or declining prices of several commodities, benefiting both vendors and consumers.
