‘Haffkine’ to be made a globally leading institute for supplying vaccines, medicines- Jaykumar Rawal

Mumbai, July 12,2019: State Food and Drug Administration Minister Jaykumar Rawal Friday said that Haffkine Bio-Medicine Production Corporation will be made into a globally leading institute for supplying vaccines and medicines of different types in Asia, Africa and other continents. For this all the administrative and financial help will be provided to the institute, he added.

Sri Rawal made this announcement during his visit to the Parel-based Haffkine Bio-Medicine Production Corporation. He reviewed the working of the corporation also. He said that the project of producing nine different types of tablets undertaken by the corporation is now in its last stage.

Haffkine is the major institute that supplies polio vaccine to countries in Asia, and Africa along with India. Besides vaccines for snake bite, scorpion bite, diphtheria, etc. are also made in this institute. The Minister said that Haffkine should establish itself as the major institute of supplying vaccines to all the states of the country besides countries in Asia, Africa and other continents. Haffkine should earn accolades as an institute for supplying vaccines in the world, he added and assured that for this the government will provide all the human resources, administrative approvals and finances to the institute.

Haffkine now produces tablets also

A new department of ‘Tablets and Capsuls production’ is being started in the Haffkine Institute with a view to providing tablets to people at reasonable pricves. Sri Rawal visited this department and reviewed the progress of the project. The project work is in the last stage and only some trivial issues have hampered its progress, he observed. He instructed the concerned officers to resolve those issues and start the project.

The incidents of dog bites happen on a large scale in the state. Sri Rawal assured that the necessary funding will be provided to the corporation for its project of producing safe and quality Rabies vaccine based on the tissue culture technology of the corporation. A national level standardization centre for snake poison is being set up and Rs23.18 lakh have been sanctioned for this. Besides, the corporation has demanded to start a poison research centre. For all these projects, besides extending cooperation from the state government, we will approach the central government also, Sri Rawal assured.

Managing Director of the Corporation Dr Rajesh Deshmukh, General Manager Subhash Shankarawar and other heads of the department were present on this occasion.
