Indian IT professionals to benefit as ban on H1B visa expires

Washington, 1 April 2021: The ban on visas issued to foreign workers, including H1B, is over. The move is expected to benefit millions of Indian IT professionals. Indeed, Trump imposed a stay on such visas until 31 March, but the Biden government did not issue any notification to pursue it.

This neutralized the order of the previous government. Between the lockdown and the Corona crisis, Trump had in June last year halted the issuance of visas for foreign workers, including H1B, until December 31.

Trump had argued that domestic workers would suffer if foreign workers were allowed to enter the country. He later extended its time period to 31 March.

President Joe Biden did not issue any notification in favor of the continuation of the visa ban. He previously promised to lift the ban on H1B visas, calling Trump’s immigration policies cruel.

H-1B visa holders can apply for permanent citizenship after five years. The demand for this visa is so high that it is issued every year through a lottery.

H1B visas are the most commonly used by over 50 Indian IT companies such as TCS, Wipro, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra, as well as large US companies such as Microsoft and Google. H1B visas are quite common among Indian IT professionals.
