Mumbai, 4th March 2022: The Maharashtra government is likely to introduce a bill on Monday to ensure Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation in the upcoming local body elections.

Amid continued protests by opposition parties over OBC reservation in local body elections, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday announced in the Assembly that the state cabinet will approve a new law ensuring OBC quota in local bodies and the bill will be passed in both the houses of the state on Monday.

“Our government is of the opinion that OBC reservation should be given in the local body elections and we all parties should come together for this,” Pawar said. He further said, “I will discuss the issue in today’s cabinet meeting and then introduce the bill in both the houses on Monday.”

He said, “we have sought details of the bill passed by Madhya Pradesh regarding OBC reservation and even Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has directed the Chief Secretary to look into this bill. Today there is a cabinet meeting and we believe that in this meeting we will discuss it and later this bill will be introduced in both houses on Monday. The government is also looking into the order of the Supreme Court yesterday and what more is needed for this bill.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will chair the state cabinet meeting at 6 pm on Friday to discuss the issue of the OBC reservation.

Recently, the BJP raised this issue in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. At the same time, the Supreme Court has refused to accept the interim report of the Maharashtra panel on quota for OBCs in local body elections.
