Maharashtra: CBI questions former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in extortion case

Mumbai, 4th March 2022: CBI officials reached Arthur Road Jail on Friday to record the statement of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in connection with the allegations of corruption. The CBI questioned Deshmukh for the second consecutive day.
CBI questioned Anil Deshmukh for the second consecutive day. The CBI had sought permission from the special PMLA court to record the statement of former state home minister Anil Deshmukh in the alleged extortion case. The court had allowed interrogation. CBI will also interrogate Deshmukh on March 5. Significantly, the CBI had earlier recorded the statements of suspended police officers Sachin Wajhe, Kundan Shinde and Sanjeev Palande in this case.
A special court in Mumbai allowed the CBI to record the statement of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in connection with the recovery of Rs 100 crore. The CBI had recently filed a petition seeking permission to record Deshmukh’s statement. Parambir Singh had alleged that Deshmukh was forcing him to take Rs 100 crore every month from bars and restaurants in Mumbai. In between, dismissed Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Waze unconditionally withdrew his petition in the Bombay High Court on Wednesday. In this petition, two orders of the commission set up to probe allegations of corruption against former Maharashtra minister Anil Deshmukh were challenged.
The court had on Tuesday said that if the petition was not withdrawn, it would be dismissed. The court had expressed displeasure over suppression of facts and non-submission of all documents in the petition. On Wednesday, Waze’s lawyer Antoorkar informed the court that Waze was withdrawing the petition unconditionally. The court also accepted this. Waze in his petition had challenged the validity of two orders passed by a commission.
