Pune, 19th February 2023: The mental health of prisoners is a significant concern, especially during times when physical visits from relatives and lawyers are not happening. The availability of telephone services can help relieve the stress of the prisoners. The government has been taking measures since 2014 to provide the facility to prisoners.

However, to improve the service further, it is recommended that prisoners should be given the telephone facility three times a month for ten minutes each, especially those whose relatives or lawyers do not visit them frequently. This will ensure that the prisoners can maintain regular contact with their loved ones and help alleviate their depression and anxiety.

Additionally, the circular issued by the government on 14th June 2017 regarding the meeting of lawyers with prisoners should be strictly followed. Prisoners who do not attend lawyer meetings should also be provided with telephone facilities for ten minutes, up to two times a month, after verifying the phone number with the police administration. The final decision regarding the visit of the lawyer will be taken by the Jail Superintendent, considering the local situation.
