Pune, 4th July 2024: As of July 2, the total water storage in all dams across Maharashtra stands at 312.43 TMC, representing 21.84% of their total capacity. Significant rainfall is still awaited in the catchment areas of many dams. Compared to previous years, the Vidarbha and Amravati divisions have the highest water storage, while the Pune and Aurangabad divisions have the lowest.
According to retired engineer Harishchandra Chakor from the Water Resources Department of the Government of Maharashtra, the main dams in the state have a combined capacity of 1,430.63 TMC. As of July 2, 21.84%, or 312.43 TMC, of water is available in these major dams.
Division-wise data reveals the following:

– Amravati Division: Water storage capacity of 136.75 TMC, with 37.80% (51.69 TMC) remaining.
– Marathwada Division: Water storage capacity of 256.45 TMC, with 9.32% (24.67 TMC) remaining.

– Konkan Division: Water storage capacity of 130.84 TMC, with 33.82% (44.25 TMC) available.
Retired engineer Harishchandra Chakor emphasized, “As of July 2, 21.84%, or 312.43 TMC, of water has been stored in the dams of Maharashtra. Heavy rainfall is still required in the catchment areas of the dams. There are still three months of the monsoon left, which should help fill the dams. However, intercepting the water flowing from the Western Ghats into the Konkan towards the sea should be a priority; otherwise, scarcity is inevitable soon.”
