Matheran (Maharashtra), 7th June 2023: A toy train traveling from the popular Matheran hill station to Neral derailed, but all passengers are safe, according to railway officials who provided this information on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 5.30 pm on Saturday when a wheel of the train’s engine derailed near Jumma Patti station, located approximately 95 kilometers away from Mumbai.
Officials stated that the train departed from Matheran at around 4 pm on Saturday, carrying approximately 95 passengers. A railway spokesperson confirmed that no injuries were reported in the accident. The passengers were promptly disembarked from the train and transported to their respective destinations in other vehicles.
Railway staff managed to bring the train back on track at around 9 pm, and it returned to Neral station at approximately 10.30 pm. This incident took place one day after the tragic train accident in Odisha, which claimed the lives of 278 people and left 1100 others injured.
The Neral-Matheran toy train is over 100 years old and covers a 21 km route. Due to safety concerns during the rainy season between Neral and Matheran, its operation is halted. A senior railway official stated that the toy train service between Neral and Matheran will remain suspended throughout the monsoon. This railway section is one of the few mountain railways in India.
The picturesque 21 km long Neral-Matheran narrow gauge track passes through the Ghats of the hill station. The toy train service between Neral and Matheran is typically suspended from June to October due to safety reasons. However, it continues to operate between Matheran and Aman Lodge, the nearest station from Dasturi Point, beyond which vehicles are not permitted on the hill station.
