Mercedes-Benz G 580 EV Recall: What Owners Need to Know
New Delhi, 27th May 2026: Luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz has issued a global recall for its all-electric G-Class SUV after identifying a potential issue with the vehicle’s wheel bolts that could affect driving stability under certain conditions.
The recall affects the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, the electric version of the iconic G-Class, with vehicles manufactured between 2024 and 2025 falling within the affected production period. The company has already initiated recall procedures in multiple markets, including India, where 99 units are reportedly impacted.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the issue stems from wheel bolts that may not meet the required specifications for the electric SUV. Over time, these bolts could gradually loosen during normal vehicle operation, potentially compromising the connection between the wheel and the vehicle. In extreme cases, this could affect driving stability and increase the risk of an accident.
The problem appears to be linked to the unique demands of the electric G-Class. Industry reports indicate that the wheel bolts originally used were based on components previously employed in combustion-engine G-Class models. However, engineers later found that the heavier weight and significantly higher torque output of the electric version created additional stress on the wheel assembly.
Mercedes-Benz’s internal investigation reportedly began after durability testing revealed a wheel bolt loosening despite meeting existing specifications. Further analysis examined factors including vehicle mass, torque loads, repeated wheel changes, and extreme driving conditions before the company decided to proceed with a recall.
The automaker has stressed that the issue is unlikely to occur under typical real-world driving conditions and that no injuries, crashes, or field incidents related to the defect have been reported so far. Nevertheless, the company has opted for a precautionary recall to address the concern before it can become a safety risk.
Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Mercedes-Benz and asked to bring their SUVs to authorised dealerships for inspection. The company will replace the wheel bolts with redesigned components and carry out the necessary repairs free of charge.
The recall comes at a significant time for Mercedes-Benz’s electric ambitions. The G 580 with EQ Technology is one of the brand’s flagship electric vehicles, combining the rugged design and off-road capabilities of the traditional G-Class with a fully electric powertrain. The SUV features a 116 kWh battery pack, a four-motor setup producing 587 hp and 1,164 Nm of torque, and a claimed WLTP range of approximately 473 kilometres.
While the recall involves a relatively small number of vehicles in India, it highlights the engineering challenges automakers continue to face as they transition high-performance and luxury models to electric platforms. As EVs typically weigh more and deliver instant torque compared to conventional vehicles, components that worked on petrol or diesel models may require significant redesigns to meet the demands of electrification.
