Monsoon Arrival Expected Soon In Andaman And Nicobar Islands; Heralding Early Onset In Kerala
Pune, 7th May 2025: The Southwest Monsoon is expected to make its arrival in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands soon, signaling the start of the monsoon season in India. Favorable weather conditions are developing over the Andaman Sea, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting that the monsoon will reach the southeastern Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands by Tuesday, (13th May). This early onset in Andaman has sparked hopes for an earlier monsoon in Kerala.
Typically, the monsoon reaches Port Blair, the capital of Andaman, by 21st May. Before that, it is expected to enter the southern Andaman Sea. By 1st June, Kerala generally witnesses the arrival of the monsoon. This year, however, the monsoon is predicted to enter the Andaman Sea as early as 13th May.
In 2023, the monsoon reached South Andaman on 19th May, with Kerala experiencing its early arrival two days earlier on 30th May. By 6th June, the monsoon had reached the coastal regions of Maharashtra, including the Konkan, South Maharashtra, and Marathwada regions.
The IMD has forecasted a 105% rainfall during the monsoon season from June to September, with a margin of error of plus or minus 5%. There are indications of good rainfall across the state, with Marathwada and central Maharashtra expected to receive higher rainfall this year.
Currently, the sea surface temperature in the equatorial Pacific Ocean is slightly above average, and the conditions are neutral—neither El Niño nor La Niña are expected. The temperature difference between the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, known as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), is also in a neutral state.
Weather experts predict that these conditions are likely to remain neutral throughout the monsoon season. The IMD is expected to announce the exact date for the monsoon’s arrival in Kerala soon. By the end of May, an updated long-term forecast and regional rainfall distribution will be released.
