NPCI to Mandate Display of Real Names in UPI Transactions from June 30 to Curb Fraud

New Delhi, 2nd May 2025: In a bid to enhance transparency and combat digital fraud, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will soon require UPI apps to display the user’s real name — as registered with their bank — during transactions. The new regulation will come into effect from June 30, 2025.
The move is aimed at helping users verify the identity of the sender or receiver, thereby reducing the risk of scams and mistaken transactions. This rule will apply to both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2Pm) transactions.
Currently, many UPI users only see display names that may not reflect the actual account holder’s name. This anonymity has been exploited by fraudsters in phishing and scam-related activities. By displaying the verified name associated with the bank account, NPCI aims to tighten security and improve trust in digital payments.
NPCI has instructed all UPI platforms to implement the change by the end of June.
UPI usage has been on a steady rise. In April 2025, users carried out 17.89 billion transactions worth over ₹23 lakh crore. In March, UPI transactions touched 18.30 billion, with a transaction value of ₹24.77 lakh crore. The daily volume is currently estimated at 590–596 million transactions, with a total daily value of ₹79,910 crore. In February, there were 16.11 billion transactions amounting to ₹21.96 lakh crore.
In addition, there are discussions around reducing the current 30-second time limit for completing UPI transactions to make the process even faster. However, no official confirmation has been issued on this proposal so far.
