Pune: 27 Stolen Laptops Recovered By Wagholi-Lonikand Police
Wagholi, 24th October 2023: The Lonikand police successfully arrested a seasoned criminal involved in a spree of laptop thefts targeting private and college hostels.
Identified as Nilesh Prafulchand Karnawat, a 39-year-old resident of Pachora taluka in Jalgaon district, the thief was taken into custody after the recovery of 27 stolen laptops, valued at approximately 11 lakh rupees.
Karnawat, addicted to gambling, confessed to committing a staggering 38 theft offences. His modus operandi involved systematically stealing laptops from various locations, including Wagholi, Sinhagad Road, Lonavla, and Dehu. The stolen laptops were then discreetly sold to different individuals in Jalgaon district.
Acting on intelligence that Karnawat was present on Raisoni College Road, the police laid a successful trap leading to his arrest. Subsequent interrogation revealed the extent of his criminal activities and the locations from which he had stolen laptops.
The recovered laptops, totaling 27 in number, have been seized as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Karnawat’s criminal history reveals a pattern of recidivism, having been released from prison in March 2023 only to resume criminal activities with 18 offences committed within eight months. Prior to his recent spree, he had a history of 21 crimes.
The suspect, operating with a strategy resembling that of a college student, would target hostels early in the morning, exploiting lax security measures to discreetly steal laptops.
The action was taken under the guidance of DCP (Zone 4) Shashikant Borate, ACP Sanjay Patil and Senior Police Inspector Vishwajit Kaingde. The team included Police Inspector (Crime) Maruti Patil, Assistant Police Inspector Gajanan Jadhav, Ravindra Godse, and police personnel Swapneel Jadhav, Balasaheb Sakate, Ajit Farande, Sandeep Tikone, Sagar Jagtap, Vinayak Salve, Kailas Salunke, Amol Dhone, Ashish Lohar, Pandurang Mane, Malhari Sapure, Sai Rokade, Deepak Kokre, Shubham Chinke, Sachin Chavan, Pritam Wagh and Gahininath Bomane.
