Pune, 9th February 2026: Pune has emerged as a key hub in India’s next phase of high-speed rail expansion, with two proposed High-Speed Rail (HSR) corridors Mumbai–Pune and Pune–Hyderabad entering the planning and execution framework following directions from the Ministry of Railways.

The Ministry has initiated steps to fast-track implementation of seven new HSR corridors announced in the Union Budget 2026. The proposed routes include Mumbai–Pune, Pune–Hyderabad, Hyderabad–Bengaluru, Hyderabad–Chennai, Chennai–Bengaluru, Delhi–Varanasi and Varanasi–Siliguri, aimed at strengthening connectivity between major economic, industrial and cultural centres.

According to officials, a high-level meeting at the Railway Board has directed the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to take immediate follow-up action for timely progress. As part of the process, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) already prepared for some corridors will be updated with current cost estimates to enable accurate financial and viability assessments.

For Pune, the inclusion of the Mumbai–Pune and Pune–Hyderabad corridors places the city at the centre of emerging high-speed rail planning in western and southern India. These corridors are expected to integrate Pune more closely with major metropolitan and industrial regions.

The Railway Board has also instructed NHSRCL to work towards standardisation of high-speed rail systems across the country, establish dedicated field-based core teams for each corridor and initiate pre-construction activities, including preparation of contract documents. Emphasis has also been laid on advance planning for trained technical manpower to support upcoming projects.

Progress on all identified action points will be reviewed periodically at appropriate levels, reflecting the government’s focus on accelerating high-speed rail implementation nationwide.
