Pune, 28th July 2023: Embracing a vision of a brighter and sustainable future for tourism, the Department of Tourism in Maharashtra has introduced ‘Youth Tourism Clubs,’ aimed at actively involving the youth in preserving the state’s rich heritage and promoting responsible tourism practices. This proactive approach aims to lay a strong foundation for a thriving and conscientious tourism industry in the region.

To instill a sense of responsible tourism and heritage awareness among the youth, the Department of Tourism has urged schools across the state to establish ‘Youth Tourism Clubs’ for students in grades 7 to 10 and junior college students. These clubs will serve as platforms for young minds to learn about sustainable tourism practices and explore local tourist attractions.

Supriya Karmakar, Deputy Director of Pune Tourism Department, expressed that the initiative aims to cultivate young ambassadors for the state’s heritage places, contributing to the growth of tourism in the region.

To create a youth tourism club, schools need a minimum of one instructor and a group of 25 students from grades 7 to 10, while junior colleges can admit students from grades 11 and 12. Club members will have the opportunity to delve into the rich local history and explore historical sites in their vicinity. The monthly club events will include lecture series, brief trips, seminars, and training sessions, enhancing their understanding of tourism and cultural heritage.

The state government has taken a supportive stance by allocating a compensation fund of Rs. 10,000 for each school and Rs. 25,000 for each junior college for the academic year 2023-24. This financial aid will empower the clubs to organize enriching activities and foster a spirit of appreciation and learning for the state’s cultural and historical treasures.
