Pune, 9th October 2025: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized stocks of two cough syrups after tests revealed excess levels of diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical, posing a serious health risk.

A stock of ‘Respifresh TR’ cough syrup worth Rs 13 lakh from Rednex Pharmaceuticals Private Limited has been confiscated, and its sale and distribution have been immediately stopped. Similarly, the stock of ‘Relife’ cough syrup from Shape Pharma Private Limited has been banned due to the same reason. Both companies are based in Gujarat, though the exact location of the seizure is believed to be Pune.

Speaking on the action, Maharashtra FDA Drug Controller D.R. Gahane said, “This action has been taken in the public interest.”

Girish Hukare, Joint Commissioner of FDA (Drugs Department), Pune Division, clarified that nine samples of cough syrups from Pune were tested, and both products were found substandard and dangerous for humans.

All sellers, wholesalers, distributors, clinics, and doctors across Maharashtra have been instructed to immediately stop using and selling these cough syrups. Anyone holding stocks of the concerned batches must report to local FDA officials without delay.

The FDA has emphasized that public safety is a priority and warned that strict action will be taken against anyone violating these orders.
