Pune 23rd July 2023: A landslide was reported on the trekking route of Raigad Fort in Velhe taluka the early hours on Saturday. Though no tourist or trekker was injured in the incident, the Department of Archaeology has issued a warning for tourists to be careful when visiting the spots around the fort.

Although the officials have cleared a considerable part of the path leading to the fort, the heavy rainfall may bring more soil down, making the situation more challenging. The Archaeology Department has advised tourists to stay away from the affected areas until the situation stabilizes.

Upon receiving information about the landslide, the officials of the Archaeology Department took measures to prevent tourists from going towards the risky areas. Additionally, Vilas Vahane, the assistant director of the Archaeology Department, has also given specific instructions to be cautious while walking on the paths near the two to three significant landslides that occurred along the route leading to Rajgad Fort from Rajwadi Sadar. These landslides resulted in numerous uprooted trees and loose soil.

It may be noted that Velhe taluka is a popular tourist destination, especially during weekends and the monsoon season when a large number of visitors hike to the Rajgad and Torna forts. On Saturdays and Sundays, three to four thousand tourists usually trek to these forts. During the monsoon, there is a significant increase in the amount of rainfall in the area, leading to potentially dangerous conditions.
