Pune: Local Resistance Grows Against Proposed International Airport in Purandar

Purandar, 19th March 2025: Residents of seven villages in Purandar taluka have begun protesting against the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation’s (MIDC) decision to declare 2,832 hectares as an industrial area for a proposed international airport. The affected villages include Pargaon Memane, Khanwadi, Ekhatpur, Munjawadi, Kumbharvalan, Vanpuri, and Udachiwadi. The villagers have threatened to take legal action against the project, citing concerns over significant agricultural land being acquired and the potential displacement of farmers.
Retired Justice B.G. Kolse-Patil recently met with farmers in Pargaon Memane, advising them on their rights and options. The villagers emphasized that the government should consider alternative sites, such as grazing land or forest areas, instead of fertile agricultural land. They also expressed reluctance to part with their land even if offered compensation at a rate higher than five times the market value.
In response to the growing opposition, the Pune District Administration has acknowledged the need to engage with local residents to address their concerns and build trust before proceeding with land acquisition. Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi stated that while the acquisition of farmers’ land is inevitable, efforts will be made to ensure that their interests are protected and their concerns are addressed through dialogue.
