Pune: Maharashtra Reports 33 New COVID-19 Cases In Last 24 Hours; Mumbai Accounts For Majority Of New Infections

Pune, 23rd May 2025: Maharashtra has recorded increase in COVID-19 cases, with 33 new infections reported in the past 24 hours. Of these, 22 are from Mumbai, five from Pune, and two from Pimpri-Chinchwad. This brings the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state for the year to 165, with Mumbai alone accounting for 148 of them.
Between 1st January and 21st May, health authorities in the state conducted tests on 6,477 suspected COVID-19 patients. The testing has confirmed 165 positive cases. Notably, the majority of these cases—over 89%—have been detected in Mumbai.
So far, 61 patients in the state have recovered from the virus. Health officials have intensified surveillance efforts, particularly focusing on individuals presenting with respiratory illnesses. Suspected cases identified during these surveys are being tested for COVID-19, and immediate treatment is being administered when needed.
The State Health Department noted that the state has recorded two COVID-related deaths this year. Both deceased patients had underlying health conditions.
Dr. Babita Kamalapurkar, Joint Director of the Health Services stated that while the rise in cases within Maharashtra remains relatively limited, other Indian states are also witnessing similar upward trends. Most patients are exhibiting only mild symptoms. In response, the BJ Government Medical College in Pune and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) have been directed to carry out genomic sequencing to identify the circulating strains of the virus.
Dr. Nina Borade, Health Chief of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) informed that hospitals run by municipal corporations are maintaining separate records for patients with respiratory illnesses. Additionally, private hospitals in urban areas have been instructed to do the same. “When a COVID-positive patient is identified, those who were in contact with them are being traced and tested as a precautionary measure,” Dr. Borade added further.
